Acting and activism were a part of her life from a young age. As a teenager, she became a safe-sex advocate and joined an educational troupe through Mount Sinai Hospital's Adolescent Health Center that performed self-written sex-ed sketches in schools and community centers.
"It was some of the best actor training I've ever had," Washington told Vanity Fair. "We would stay in character after the show, and the audience would interact with us. It taught me the importance of really understanding everything about who you're playing, because you never knew what question was going to come."

12-Year-Old Lorde Was Super Adorable
We may never be royals, but we all went to junior high.
Lorde won two Grammy Awards this year for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. She was obviously pretty stoked.

Belmont Intermediate School, which Ella Yelich-O'Connor (aka Lorde) attended, congratulated the songstress in the cutest way possible.
But it's not the first time that Belmont has honored Lorde, since she also won the school's version of American Idol. According to the Herald Sun, "[Lorde] was crowned the winner of Belmont Idol in 2009 after performing a cover of Duffy's 'Warwick Avenue.'"
